Executive Board Meeting, Arlanda (Stockholm)

The Executive Board (EB) of the EISCAT_3D Preparatory Phase Project met during the past two days at Arlanda, which is the main airport of Stockholm. Arlanda is a convenient location, because all but one participant can get there with one direct flight only. The Executive Board meets every three months, and in between the members keep in touch with telephone conferences every Friday afternoon.

Contrary to the situation in Sodankylä on Wednesday, at Arlanda spring is in full swing, the these flowers show, which are planted just outside our meeting hotel. But there's also a different view to the case of spring: in the North, when we talk about spring, we often refer to the time of March and April, when the days are getting longer, the weather is often sunny with the temperatures more and more frequently above freezing during the day, and solidly below freezing in the night. This is the best time for winter sports, since the thick snow cover will become very hard and it is easy to move everywhere, on skies, snow shoes, snow mobile, dog sled, or whichever way you prefer.

During this past meeting, which took place on 3rd and 4th May 2012, we discussed the progress of the EISCAT_3D project over the first reporting period of 18 months, which just ended in March 2012. This is a busy and important time, since full documentation of the project has to be submitted to the European Commission, which funds FP7 projects, within about two months after completion of this period.

At the beginning of this meeting, we were happy to welcome a new member to the team: Dr Björn Gustavsson joined the project on 1st May 2012. More about this in another blog post soon.

Have a good weekend, and enjoy the spring!
