The position’s affiliation
Tromsø Geophysical Observatory (TGO) (http://uit.no/prosjekter/prosjekt?p_document_id=220219) is a department of the Faculty of Science and Technology and has a scientific staff of 2 scientists, and a technical staff of 3 engineers. TGO’s purpose is to maintain observations of geomagnetism and the Earth’s atmosphere, particularly the ionosphere. Data are delivered to various repositories worldwide but also locally archived. The quality of the measurements is paramount. TGO performs measurements in Tromsø, the field stations at Ramfjordmoen, in Adventdalen, Ny-Ålesund, and at instrument sites distributed over the Norwegian mainland, the Barents Sea and Svalbard.
TGO collaborates with several academic institutions: local, national and international, and with industry – in particular oil-related. TGO is also engaged in European Union and European Space Agency projects.
The position’s field of research
The research should be related to the overall operation philosophy of TGO, i.e. either long time-series and/or existing instrumentation. She/he is expected to be able to assume responsibility for TGO’s geomagnetic and ionospheric observation programs, and take part in activities related to data quality control and archiving, and to some degree also maintenance of instruments in the field.
She/he is expected to collaborate with the private sector industry and the public sector, and be engaged in various activities leading to external funding and project involvement and development. It is desired that the successful applicant establish scientific collaboration with researchers at the Department of Physics and Technology, and at other departments within the faculty, and that she/he also engage herself/himself in supervision of master and PhD students.
